Emo Band Releases Album on Retro NES Console – The Niche Nostalgia of 2026 (2026)

Daydream Plus, an emo math-rock band, has taken a unique and niche approach to releasing their debut album, 'Second Last Day Of Summer'. The album's release includes a traditional CD and vinyl version, but the most intriguing aspect is the 8-bit chiptune remix, available exclusively as a fully-functional Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) cartridge. This bold move is a testament to the band's love for physical media and a rebellion against the industry's shift towards digital-only releases.

The band's guitarist, Payson Power, is a self-proclaimed collector of physical media, citing the respect it shows to the artist and the joy of building a collection over time. He reminisces about the days of waiting for records to arrive via catalogue, a process that allowed for a deeper appreciation of the music. Power's passion for physical media is further evident in his previous band, Tomb Mould, where they built a following with limited-edition cassette drops.

The decision to release a physical game in 2026 goes against industry trends, as digital-only releases are becoming the norm. Power expresses concern about the implications of digital ownership, where the license to play can be revoked, and updates often result in an inferior product. He believes that this shift rewards greed and corporate practices, which is a stark contrast to the band's desire for authenticity.

Daydream Plus formed in 2020, with Power seeking to create calmer songs after his previous band's intense metal sound. The band's unique chord progressions and catchy, melodic songs have been influenced by emo and instrumental math-rock pioneers, as well as chiptune groups like Anamanaguchi and Diasterpeace. The album's title, 'Second Last Day Of Summer', reflects Power's childhood memories of the last day of summer holidays, a time filled with anticipation and dread.

The NES remix, titled 'Extended Forecast', is a labor of love. Power spent a year re-programming the album's audio into the NES's limited channels, ensuring an authentic 8-bit experience. The cartridge not only plays the album but also displays the weather on the actual 'Second Last Day Of Summer' in Toronto, where Power is from. The pixelated graphics change color to match the album's journey from day to night, creating a unique and immersive experience.

Despite the challenges, Power is proud of the result, even if it's not for everyone. He believes that authenticity and creativity are essential in music, and this project has allowed him to push boundaries and create something truly special. The album is available via Run For Cover, with a digital release of 'Extended Forecast' planned for later this year.
